First Batch of Computer designed Logos

My first vision for the Visicom logo was a 3D orb like logo for Visicom. Orb logos are very popular and I felt they were appropriate for the modern look Visicom would like. I was curious to see if i could create this look in Illustrator since I never tried anything like it before. I feel this trial was a success and plan to take it farther by making the three orbs represent the divisions of Visicom (Connect, Voice, and Business) with their specified colors and a simple icon for each.

Early Visicom Logo Sketches

These are early sketches of the Visicom logo in my sketchbook. After reading up on logos, I was at first leaning toward a SCI FI font because that's becoming a popular trend for for business logos, but after talking to the CEO of Visicom, I gathered he would prefer to take the logo away from that sci fi look.

Competitor Logos

These are 3 well known competitors. Each use a simple Sans Serif font with a simple icon.
This simplicity is necessary for several reasons, especially when used very small on things like cell phones. For this reason I plan to follow these unwritten rules while creating the Visicom Logo. Visicom has other divisions such as Voice, Business, Connect, and Radio. Competitors like verizon that also have other divisons such as business and wireless simply attach the division in a less emphasized font. This is smart because instead of giving each division a separate identy, it helps brand Verizon with a sense of unity.

The Method Behind the Maddness...

Previously I posted original Logos for three potential clients, a a party hosting agency (Evium), photographer (Alvin Reeves), and Visicom Business. I personally know the personnel over each of these businesses, which to me is even a greater incentive to come up with a great logo. I decided to go with Visicom Busines because not only were they the most excited, they are also the type of business I feel I should familiarize myself with for future logo design projects. A communication company may not seem as fun as other businesses to design a logo for, but it is the perfect challenge I need that will perhaps help teach me lessons useful for future clients.

Branding Research

"Branding is not about getting your target market to choose you over the competition, but it is about getting your prospects to see you as the only one that provides a solution to their problem."
-Laura Lake

Branding involves the experiences and perceptions the customer obtains while dealing with your particular brand, some of which you can influence, some you cannot.

According to Laura Lake,

The objectives that a good brand will achieve include:

  • Delivers the message clearly
  • Confirms your credibility
  • Connects your target prospects emotionally
  • Motivates the buyer
  • Concretes User Loyalty
The first step in developing a brand strategy for a client is to consider these questions.

  1. What products and/or services do you offer? Define the qualities of these services and/or products.
  2. What are the core values of your products and services? What are the core values of your company?
  3. What is the mission of your company?
  4. What does your company specializes in?
  5. Who is your target market? Who do your products and services attract?
  6. What is the tagline of your company? What message does your tagline send to your prospects?
  7. Using the information from the previous steps create a personality or character for your company that represents your products or services. What is the character like? What qualities stand out? Is the personality of your company innovative, creative, energectic, or sophisticated?
  8. Use the personality that you created in the previous step and build a relationship with your target market that you defined in Step 5. How does that personality react to target audience? What characteristics stand out? Which characteristics and qualities get the attention of your prospects.
  9. Review the answers to the questions above and create a profile of your brand. Describe the personality or character with words just as if you were writing a biography or personal ad. Be creative.
